A new forest area is taking shape, thanks to a group of environmentally aware students.
Members of the environmental team at Burnt Mill Academy, in Harlow, joined forces with the community to plant trees.
Along with Harlow Council, the 15 students from Year 7 and 8 volunteered their time to plant 45 trees in the town park.
Dan Bolt, assistant headteacher in charge of Key Stage 3, said: “Our environmental team regularly pick up litter around the school and work hard to reduce the amount of litter we have. They are very passionate about the cause and have given assemblies to promote litter picking and the use of the school’s bins to save the wildlife.
“They were approached by the council to see if they would be able to help with the tree planting project. They really enjoyed taking the opportunity to get involved. It gave them a real sense of pride in their community.
“They learnt about the trees, but were also able to give their feedback on the town park and whether they use it or not and their reasons.
“We are looking for more opportunities for our students to get involved in projects in the community like this one.”
