The Princes Alexandra hospital has confirmed a further eight deaths due to coronavirus.

The trust which runs the hospital today confirmed eight people had died from the deadly virus over a six-day period.

The figures, published by NHS England, take the hospital’s Covid-19 death toll to 29.

Lance McCarthy, chief executive, for The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust said: “We can confirm that sadly, eight patients, aged between 69 and 90 years old, who had underlying conditions have passed away at The Princess Alexandra Hospital. They had tested positive for COVID-19.

“Our thoughts and condolences remain with the patient’s family and loved ones at this difficult time."

Essex accounts for 380 of the UK’s 25,150 total confirmed cases.

Across the UK, a further 486 people, who tested positive for coronavirus have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 2,137.

Of those who died, patients were aged between 13 and 99 years old; 20 of the 486 patients had no known underlying health condition.

A spokesperson for NHS England said the new fatalities’ families had been informed of their deaths.
