A recap on what has happened
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, schools were told in late March (just before the lockdown) to close its doors to the majority of pupils. But they were allowed to remain open to cater for the children of key workers.
With the UK past the peak of the coronavirus outbreak, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on May 10 a plan to ease the lockdown.
As part of that plan, Mr Johnson said it is hoped that the phased reopening of primary schools would begin from June 1 - with Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 pupils the first to return.
Year 10s and Year 12s preparing for exams next year could also be allowed to return to school for face-to-face support from teachers. But the majority of secondary school pupils would not return until at least September.
