Epping Town Council Market reopened today with social distancing measures in place to ensure the safety of traders and shoppers.
The market, which dates back to 1253, was closed amid the coronavirus pandemic as the government took steps to slow the spread of Covid-19.
This morning (Monday, June 1) the market reopened with more than ten stalls housing essential traders.
Shoppers turned up in good numbers to welcome back the weekly market.
Open to keen shoppers were stalls selling groceries, pet food, fruit and vegetables, household goods, flowers, dried fruit and nuts, plants, perspex and blinds, watch batteries, hardware and bread.
Many traders were wearing PPE – face masks and gloves – and providing buckets for shoppers to drop payment into.
People were seen to adhere to the government's two-metre social distancing advice with markings laid out to allow shoppers to easily peruse goods while keeping their distance.
Further stalls will return on Monday, June 8, and Monday, June 15, in line with the government's announcement to allow all retail outlets to reopen from June 15.
Before lockdown the market, which runs every Monday, hosted almost 60 stalls.
