Essex County Fire and Rescue Service fitted almost 1,500 smoke alarms during the coronavirus lockdown.

Between March and July firefighters fitted 1,464 alarms including154 sensory smoke alarms as the service targets a working smoke alarm in every home in the county.

During the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the home fire safety team adapted quickly to ensure it could reach the most vulnerable people in the county.

A total of 1,062 vulnerable people had their fire risk reduced since March thanks to home visits.

Andrea MacAlister, head of community safety said: “ECFRS’ priority is to keep the people of Essex safe. We’re working hard to make sure that wherever possible, our essential fire prevention work has continued during the coronavirus outbreak. This includes our Safe and Well offer, which makes people far safer in their homes.

“Fire safety is more important than ever at this time. If you are concerned about the fire risk to yourself or a vulnerable family member or friend, you can book them a free home fire safety visit at www.essex-fire.gov.uk/book.

“Alternatively, there is some great advice on our website. If you have any questions or concerns about fire safety during the coronavirus outbreak, please call our advisors on 0300 303 0088.”

The service offers a free home fire safety visit to anyone without working smoke alarms and people who need sensory smoke alarms.
