A weather warning for severe thunderstorms has been put in place until Thursday while the hot weather continues.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning across the UK from today (Monday) until 11.59pm on Thursday (August 13).

The weather forecaster said some places are likely to see severe thunderstorms from Monday – although says there is “significant uncertainty in location and timing”.

Across the East of England, the Met Office said it is going to “very hot and sunny”, while thunderstorms are possible.

Epping Forest Guardian:

According to the warning:

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes and large hail.
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to public transport.
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and increased chance of accidents.
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life

The Met Office said: “Whilst the most intense thunderstorms, in some instances associated with large hail, will most probably be those triggered by the high temperatures of the day over England and Wales, other areas of storms producing heavy rainfall, frequent lightning and strong gusty winds could reach further north at times over Scotland and Northern Ireland. These could occur at any time of the day.

“Where the storms occur, rainfall totals of 30-40 mm could fall in an hour, with some locations potentially receiving 60-80 mm in 3 hours, although these will be fairly isolated.”

Temperatures are set to remain warm despite the warning, with highs of 36c predicted by the Met Office in the East of England today.

Below is a breakdown of the weather predicted by the forecaster this week for the East of England.

Monday:

It is set to be very hot with sunshine once again, although there is a chance of one or two heavy and potentially thundery showers while hail is also possible. Maximum temperature 36 °C.

Tuesday:

It is set to be a very hot day, with temperatures set to reach 37c. Western areas may see some thundery showers developing later, which may become heavy.
