Three men escaped arrested dressed only in their underwear after being spotted hunting hare.

Alarmed residents alerted Essex Police to a group of who had been involved in hare coursing driving through Ongar yesterday (Wednesday, October 14).

Hare coursing is the pursuit of hares with greyhounds or other dogs, which chase the hare by sight, not by scent.

Units from the forces rural engagement team, dog section and Loughton branches hurried to the scene to give chase to the men.

The group abandoned their four by four vehicle, dog and even their clothes as they took off on foot to evade capture.

In a post on Facebook, a spokesperson for Essex Police said: "Some role reversal was in play as we pursued this vehicle along country roads and eventually across fields and through streams.

"However some skilful evasion tactics saw our quarry slip and slide away as they distracted us by losing first, their vehicle, then their dog and eventually all of their clothing.

"It was bare faced cheek as the three males made good their escape in just their muddy and wet underwear.

"Your clothing, four by four and dog are currently with us, should you want to be reunited with them. So please do pop into a local station."
