An academy will remain shut tomorrow due to a large industrial fire near to the site.

Stewards Academy at Parnall Rd, Harlow, was closed today (November 11) following a large industrial fire that took place in the early morning.

Firefighters were called at around 12.33am to reports of a large fire at an industrial unit.

While Essex County Fire & Rescue Service reported that the fire was under control by 6am, crews have been working since this morning with local authorities and police to "establish a strategy" for the next 24 hours.

Seven new crews took over the incident at 4pm and Dan Kirk who is now leading the incident that firefighters are expected to be at the scene "well into this evening" before the area can be made safe.

He has now said that the decision has been made to keep the academy closed tomorrow (November 12).

Mr Kirk added: "After working closely today with the headteacher of Stewards Academy, the local council, the Environment Agency and Essex Police, a decision has been taken to keep the academy closed tomorrow.

"While good progress is continuing to be made in extinguishing the remainder of the fire, an easterly wind is expected to begin carrying the smoke in the direction of the school site shortly.
