The council has warned residents must continue to obey Covid regulations amid fears the latest easing of rules, combined with improving weather, may tempt some to break the rules.
Earlier this week the latest milestone on the roadmap out of lockdown kicked in, with gyms, hairdressers, non-essential shops and pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants welcoming back customers for the first time in months.
On Monday, as shoppers flocked to the high streets, Epping Forest District Council officers and Essex Police officers worked together to ensure a safe and sociable reopening.
“While we are looking forward to welcoming residents and visitors back to our high streets we recognise that easing of restrictions, hopefully coupled with warmer, Spring-like weather, may tempt some to disregard ongoing Covid rules,” a council spokesperson said.
“For instance, social distancing is still required, along with the rule of 6 people gathering in groups outdoors, and wearing masks in shops.
“It is important we move slowly, and responsibly out of lockdown into a new normal to avoid facing further restrictions in the months ahead.”
Council officers from licensing, economic development and enforcement are working together with community policing teams across the districts to support businesses – in particular licensed premises – helping them to open safely while observing restrictions.
Caroline Wiggins, lead officer for Epping Forest District Community Safety Partnership said: “During what we all hope are the final stages of lockdown we are committed to keeping the public safe and ensuring the easing of restrictions runs smoothly.
“Officers from the Community Policing and Town Centre teams will be working together with Brentwood and Epping Forest District Councils on the reopening of licensed premises and retail outlets to ensure normality can return to our communities.
“We will continue to approach Covid-19 restrictions as we have throughout the pandemic – engaging, explaining, encouraging people.
“Our aim is to support everyone in safely enjoying the new normal.”
