A MAIN road has now been cleared after a huge tree toppled over during stormy weather.

The silver birch tree was found sprawled across Elmsleigh Drive by residents at around 6am this morning.

The road was closed while tree surgeouns chopped up the branches and removed the debris.

Cars were diverted away from the area until the tree had been cleared from the road.

Workers were then at the scene at 10am to tarmac the pavement where the base of the tree had been uprooted.

It comes as weather experts have warned strong winds are set to batter the county today.

Met Office bosses warned there could be disruption on transport and some tree branches may fall due to the stormy weather.

A spokesman said: "Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely. Probably some bus and train services will also affected, with some journeys taking longer.

"Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges are likely. Damage to outdoor temporary structures is possible, with some tree branches down too.

"It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and or large waves.”
