Pictured at the top of this page is The Shaftesbury Holiday House & Retreat in Staples Road, Loughton, in 1917.

The retreat opened in 1891 and hosted thousands of poor East End children every summer.

On offer were amusements, refreshments and a romp in the forest, much to the nuisance of local residents well into the 1930s.

Epping Forest Guardian:

The house still stands.
