To safeguard its future, St Clare Hospice is looking for a trustee with financial expertise to join the board.

This is part of a recently revealed ambitious new strategy, which sets out plans for the next 20 years for its free palliative care for people living with terminal or life-limiting illnesses across West Essex and the East Herts border.

With limited NHS funding the charity needs to fundraise the majority of this each year through donations and other voluntary sources.

Sarah Thompson, St Clare Hospice CEO, said: “We are seeking someone with senior strategic financial experience, preferably a highly experienced accountant, and although experience of charity accounting is desirable, it is not essential.

“We are in good financial health thanks to the incredible support of our local community and the prudent activity of our senior leadership team. We are looking for someone who is able to contribute to our board with a good understanding of how we can best use our resources for delivery of outstanding patient care services as well as sustaining our services for the future.

“As an organisation we are committed to having a hospice team that is made up of diverse skills, experiences and abilities and that reflects the communities we serve. We are particularly keen to encourage BAME, disabled and LGBTQ+ applicants and value the positive impact that difference has on our hospice and thinking.”

The hospice has annual costs of around £5 million. Fundraising brings in most of that money.

Last year St Clare Hospice cared for 1,409 people, with 201 of those cared for at the hospice’s inpatient unit, however the vast majority of care is delivered out in the community, in peoples own homes and through the St Clare Hospice Wellbeing Hub and specialist clinics.

It provides physical, emotional, social, psychological and spiritual end-of-life support, with timely access to skilled, compassionate and sensitive care in a place of people’s choice.
