The winner of a Theydon Bois Golf Club trophy wants to continue playing until he is 100 years old.

John Goode, 87, won the Coronation Salver 36-hole event on Wednesday, August 31. 

The club believes he is the oldest winner of a major trophy in its 125-year history.

Dubbed ‘Johnny Be Goode’ by his fellow Essex golfers, he surged to the top of the leader board with rounds of 64 and 69 before beating club mate Kevin Townsend.

John said: “Everyone laughs at my one-seater buggy because it looks like a shopping trolley but it has given me golfing longevity.

"Our club professional helps me with a few tips and right now I feel that I could keep going until I'm 100."
