A quiet corner of Buxton School in Leytonstone is humming with success.

The school has won a Highly Commended Certificate in the Junior Category at the Epping Forest Honey Competition, and the honey that impressed the judges came straight from its Secret Garden.

Congratulations go to Buxton’s Junior Beekeepers, Clara, Marlie and Fumi, who extracted the honey entered at the show.

Their careful work turned the harvest from the school’s two beehives into jars worthy of a prize.

It is a very proud moment for the whole Buxton community, and a sweet reward for months of patience, teamwork and care.

Buxton is an all-through school for children aged three to 16, and its Secret Garden (where the beehives are housed) doubles as a living classroom.

Through the Beekeepers Club, Class Garden Sessions and Gardening Clubs after school, pupils discover how a colony works, why pollinators matter to London’s green spaces, and how nectar becomes honey.

Keeping bees at school is also a lesson in responsibility.

Senior science technician Ms Jand supervises the hives, with safety and care at the centre of every visit.

The honey is sold to Buxton families, giving every jar a taste of east London.

The hives, and all the wonderful learning and experiences that come from them, are funded by donations, and anyone wishing to contribute to their maintenance can do so here.
