Justin Edinburgh thought Leyton Orient “thoroughly deserved” to win as his side produced another comeback, this time to win 3-2 at home to Eastleigh to go back to the top of the National League.

The O’s rescued a point late on at the weekend after being 2-0 down to FC Halifax Town, and their character shone through again on Tuesday night when, after being 2-1 behind at the break, second-half goals from Macauley Bonne and James Brophy sealed all three points.

After the game, Edinburgh said: “Again, I thought it was thoroughly deserved. Barring the two disappointing goals, I thought we were excellent throughout the game. We picked up where we left off on Saturday and took that into tonight’s game against difficult opponents and difficult marksmen.

“They caused problems when the ball went into the box but like I said, good three points, valuable, and we go back to the top of the league.

“It was [a real test of character] but I said in my notes that I back these boys. I have no doubts that when it’s been asked or called upon they’ve delivered and they did that tonight.”

For all the fight that the O’s have shown recently, they’ve struggled to keep clean sheets. With two goals conceded in each of their last three league games, the boss says they need to get the basic things right.

He said: “They were coming frequently and regularly but over the last three or four games we’ve lost the knowledge of how to defend our box.

“I guess that comes with the magnitude of the games and what it means; we just need to get back to basics on that front but other than that, I thought we were excellent tonight and we scored some really good goals.”

Edinburgh certainly felt as though his half-time message worked as he reminded the players of the importance of playing how they know.

He said: “I told them to get back to what we know and what we’re good at. We need trust and belief, firstly individually and as a group but barring the two goals Dean Brill had nothing else to do, we’ve just got to get back to the basics of defending.”
