Oakview need only a point from their final game of the season on Sunday to once again be crowned Watford Sunday League champions after battling out a 2-2 draw with title challengers Reed Rangers.
Both sides went into the game knowing three points would give them the Premier Division crown, but neither could gain the upper hand in a tense first half in which Reed had the slight advantage.
Oakview drew first blood five minutes after the restart through Lewis Putman to take a big step towards a sixth consecutive title, but their opponents were in no mood to roll over and levelled five minutes later when Lewis Stead curled in a free-kick.
Suddenly the game and the destiny of the title seemed to have swung in Reed’s favour and 20 minutes into the second half they went ahead when Dom David produced a pin-point cross for Nick Kerley to head home.
However, that advantage was to last only five minutes as a lapse in concentration allowed Putman to net his second of the game.
Both sides sought a title-clinching third goal, but neither could find it, leaving Oakview requiring just a draw against fourth-placed Evergreen this weekend, due to a far superior goal difference, while Rangers can only watch and hope.
