Sam Sargeant felt that Leyton Orient’s three-point haul on Saturday was well deserved after they were forced to hang on at the end.

The O’s held a 3-0 half-time lead but after hosts Cambridge United bounced back with two goals in the second half, Orient were forced into some last-ditch defending, and goalkeeping, to preserve their lead.

They were successful in doing so and recorded their first win in any competition since the 4-0 triumph at Grimsby Town on October 19.

After the game, Sargeant said: “You look at the two goals we conceded and there’s things that we as a team could have done better. At the end of the day, the main thing is coming away with three points.

“A clean sheet would have been lovely for me but them three points are the main thing and now it’s four games unbeaten in all competitions and that three points has given us a really good base to go and build on this Christmas period.”

Sargeant was certainly the busier of the two keepers in the second half, and despite conceding twice he produced a number of top saves to keep Cambridge out as much as possible.

He said: “It’s them big moments for me, that’s what I’m there for. I went through the first half not really having anything to do, I think I had one pick up and the rest was just kicking.

“Then really early in the second half I had to be alert for a couple of saves which I had to deal with. Obviously concentration as a goalkeeper is a big thing and I think that’s certainly something that I’ve developed and I feel like I’ve matured in that way over this season.”
